latestHere's some bonus knowledge about witches in the West Wickham area. During the career of the so-called witch hunter Matthew Hopkins, hundreds of people were accused of being witches across East Anglia including six from West Wickham. In 1645 Joan Beales, Mary Brame, Sybil Greene, Elisabeth Man, Isaac Stebbing, Mary Winter were all accused. It is not known what happened to them, but by the end of 1645, Hopkins’ Company had condemned at least 117 witches to death. The mid-1600’s was a popular time for witches, as nearby Ipswich had so many witches in their jail, they had to introduce a tax to pay the jailer over time. Thankfully, West Wickham seems to have been drama free lately, as evidenced by all the activity on it's Wikipedia page. Very much a one-duck-pond.
